Breeder and Exhibitor of The Delightful Mini Chin Rex

Hello and welcome to the Blueclover Stud website. I had to put these 2 stunning pictures of the view from my front door, they really make me so proud to live in Perthshire! I am a member of the British Rabbit Council and Scottish Rabbit Club. I am breeding standard orange rex and mini chin rex rabbits as a hobby. I am a very small stud as I have only ventured into breeding rabbits last year and first and foremost my rabbits welfare and comfort is paramount to me. I keep my rabbits in a nicely built garage which provides shelter and shade from cold , wind and wet weather, I also have a fan in the rabbitry so when the weather is too hot I can cool and circulate the air to make my rabbits more comfortable. I currently have 16 hutches with a 4ft x 4ft mobile raised run.
I am extremely lucky as my husband is an electrician and his friend is an exceptionally good joiner and they have built me my own little rabbitry! The hutches are 4ft x 2ft x 2ft and 8ft x 2ft x 2ft for does and their kits, lets just say that being a mum of 3 under 5 makes me realise that mums need their space too!. In the summer my himalayan rabbits get out on grass at least 2 or 3 times a week, weather permitting and I always make sure the run is out of direct sunlight and well in the shade so as not to change the colour on their points. I have a run in the garage so that when the weather is bad they can still get exercise. My show rex stock get to have the run of one of my breeding hutches at the moment which is 8ft x 2ft x 2ft, the hutch's floor is extremely thick with clean shavings so their feet will not become worn/damaged. When a rabbit has been in the run I always make sure that they return to a clean and tidied hutch with urine patches removed and any obvious droppings removed.
All stock is hayed around 6.00pm with water bottles topped up. Youngstock and pregnant does are fed and hayed in the morning and any does with kits have all droppings and urine patches removed at am and pm and any obvious urine areas discenfected.
Hutches are 'set fair' each day around 6.30pm and all rex stock have their hutches topped up with fresh shavings if needed as I keep them on a very, very deep bed of shavings. All the hutches get a full clean out once a week with toilet areas being disinfected for hygiene and fly control, to discenfect I use dilute Detol. I have 3 fly sheets hanging up at various places in my rabbitry to help reduce fly irritation to my stock and in summer months I feed 100% chinese garil powder to all my rabbits every day. Garlic can be expensive but all you have to do is plant a few garlic cloves in a plant pot and the return you get is really super. Next year I am going to designate an area for marigolds as not only do rabbits adore them but they are so easy to grow and the children just love planting and watering them not to mention picking them for the rabbits. It is also so easy to collect the seeds of the marigold so once you have bought your first plants you don't need to buy any more as you can grow your own.
I feed feed the best dust free hay I can find. I will also (when overgrown) hand pick grass and clover out of the garden as this is the most natural food a rabbit can have. You have to make sure that the grass is free from chemicals and dog urine. Dandelions are also a great treat, rabbits especially love the stalks and leaves of the dandelion but don't overfeed them as they can make your rabbits droppings rather loose and give them an upset stomach. For the concentrate part of my rabbits feed I use Dodson & Horrel Chudleys Rabbit Royale, my rabbits adore this and nothing gets left unlike other makes I have tried and it looks very pleasing to the human eye as well.
I will have 1 or 2 litters from each of my does per year depending on what I am aiming for, the litter of kits will be sexed and assessed for show, breeding and pet potential. All show rabbits will be rung, breeding and pet quality will not unless especially requested by the new owner. I will not let a baby rabbit leave Blueclover Stud until it is 10-12 weeks, sometimes this maybe 13 or 14 weeks depending on the confidence and maturity of the young rabbit as to rehome them earlier than this can place tremendous stress on the young rabbit.
My aim is to produce the best quality stock I can, I am currently working on my mini chin and mini broken chin line.
I hope you enjoy my website and please feel free to sign my guest book and leave any comments.

This picture shows half of my rabbitry, once my rabbitry is fully built I will get better pictures on this page.
